EVERYONE IN HARMONY! By now you have undoubtedly heard the latest from BHS Leadership:
Here are some excerpts from the BHS statement (full text in the link above) that we feel are directly relevant to the beliefs and mission of the MBHA:
“Effective immediately, membership in the Barbershop Harmony Society is open to EVERYONE. Beginning today, we welcome women to join the Barbershop Harmony Society as members.
Everyone means EVERYONE – people of every age, of every background, every gender identity, every race, every sexual orientation, every political opinion or spiritual belief. Every person who loves to harmonize has a place in our family.
“…..This is about adding, not subtracting. More people, sharing more harmony, and more joy, in more ways.
“……With our Strategic Vision focused on Everyone in Harmony, we can support many kinds of barbershop activities — men’s, women’s, mixed — in many different ways.”
You can find responses to questions that BHS has anticipated at the following link: http://www.barbershop.org/everyoneinharmony/faqs/
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR MBHA?
MBHA will be considering how we can best coordinate both organizations’ activities to realize our shared goal of Everyone in Harmony. In our short existence, we have established a member-friendly organization that offers very personal service and encouragement to mixed barbershoppers. MBHA is the ONLY organization focused solely on the needs of the emerging and lively North American mixed barbershop harmony community. We will bring this knowledge and focus to the table as we enter discussions with BHS on how we may proceed with our mission of promoting, encouraging, and celebrating mixed voice barbershop harmony in North America in cooperation with the Society’s vision.
As we reach agreement, that will be shared with the barbershop universe.
In the meantime, MBHA will be creating a FAQ document of our own so we can begin to address some questions our members will likely have. At this point, we do not have definitive answers — discussions are ongoing, both internally and in conjunction with BHS and HI. We ask you to be patient and STAY TUNED, as exciting new changes will be coming. Check back here on our website (www.mixedbarbershop.org) and on Facebook at Mixed Barbershop Singers and Mixed Barbershop Harmony Association for updates, information, and, in time, answers to your questions!
